AVA PetPEP - The Australian Veterinary Association Pets & People Education Program

The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is proud to present AVA PetPEP - the Pets and People Education Program. The program is a free educational initiative, which aims to enhance children’s understanding of animals and teach them about responsible pet ownership.

AVA PetPEP is designed to be implemented in primary schools, from pre-school to pre-high school. The lessons and activities of the program have a powerful potential to ensure that the next generation of pet owners will be informed of the responsibilities associated with owning pets.

How does AVA PetPEP work? An AVA PetPEP Teachers’ Resource Book designed by veterinarians and teachers aims to provide schools with worksheets, activities, websites, black line masters and industry contacts to introduce the program into the curriculum. Veterinarians and veterinary nurses are also available to add a “live” aspect to the program by visiting classrooms to discuss topics such as caring for your pet’s health, selecting a pet, safety around animals and the role of vets/vet nurses in the community.

AVA PetPEP began in 1991 in Western Australia. Since then, it has grown to be a national initiative. Qualified and experienced education officers are employed in all states to assist with the implementation of AVA PetPEP. Please call 1800 282 738 to speak to your nearest education officer.
