Centre for Grief Education

Interest in the complex dynamics of the human-animal bond has raised awareness of the impact and wide social repercussions of pet bereavement in the community.

Pet Loss: Exploring the bond between people and their companion animal.

This half-day workshop provides an introduction to the issue of pet death and enables participants to gain a greater understanding of pet loss and an awareness of factors that contribute to complicated loss. It examines ways to recognise those at risk and strategies for supporting people who are grieving the death of a companion animal as well as self care and peer support for people working in this field.

The course provides a sound theoretical understanding of grief and loss by examining a range of theories and issues associated with bereavement and animal guardians, and facilitates the ability of veterinary practitioners and animal welfare workers to manage traumatic events and assist grieving clients in a busy workplace environment.

This course is aimed at professionals with an interest in grief and pet loss, including veterinarians, veterinary nurses, animal welfare workers, counsellors, therapists, psychologists, social workers, funeral directors, chaplains and clergy.
