The Federation of Riding for the Disabled International (FRDI)

The Federation of Riding for the Disabled International (FRDI)/La Federation Internationale d’Equitation Therapeutique is an international federation with members in over 50 countries. It was founded to form world-wide links between countries and centres offering therapeutic horse-riding and driving, and to assist in the development of programs in new areas of the world.
People with many types of disabilities have found benefits from therapeutic riding. Physical disabilities ranging from cerebral palsy through to accidental injury, impairments such as autism, developmental delay and emotional disturbances all respond to riding therapy. The motivation created by horses can be harnessed to advance education for people with learning disabilities.
In addition to producing a sense of independence and responsibility, riding has the added advantage of the human-animal bonding component as the student learns to care for the horse.
FRDI offers education information via the publication of an International Directory of Education and Training. A Scientific and Educational Journal of Therapeutic Riding is published annually, together with a quarterly newsletter. International Congresses are sponsored every three years, with Regional Congresses held in the intervening years.
FRDI is actively involved in establishing international standards of safety and competency in instruction, and in encouraging high standards of protection and training of horses for therapeutic purposes.
