The Kintala Club Inc. - Pet Facilitated Therapy Training

Founded in 1976, the Kintala Club trains dogs using positive reinforcement only (no correction chains or force). This “Gentle Modern Method of Dog Training” is a uniquely different method developed by the late David Weston who also pioneered early training and socialisation of dogs from 8 weeks of age.

The club offers:

  • Pet Facilitated Therapy training. Dogs must have passed a government-approved course, Ideal Dogs of Australia, and be temperamentally sound. Volunteers and their dogs visit aged care facilities supervised by the co-ordinator of the program, where they work with staff members to facilitate conversation and physical activity. Older people are often deprived of touch in our society, so patting and fondling the dogs is particularly beneficial, especially reaching those with dementia. People suffering speech problems after a stroke may try to talk to a dog, which then often encourages them to communicate with others around them.
  • Puppy training courses starting between 8 and 14 weeks of age. An accredited instructor gives individual lessons. Early socialisation teaches canine social skills and bite inhibition.
  • Ideal Dogs of Australia courses.
  • Ongoing training (10 levels, basic to advanced) and socialisation for dogs.
